Workshop Spotlight

– Rational Game Design By Andrei Istrate –

Crash Course

“One of the most difficult tasks men can perform, however much others may despise it, is the invention of good games and it cannot be done by men out of touch with their instinctive selves.” — Carl Jung,

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Like many of you, I’ve been enjoying video games for most of my life. In fact, I’ve been so passionate about them that for the last 12 years this has been my calling. From testing to full product development, from blockbusters to small indie projects, from the old Xbox to the newly VR hardware, it’s been and keeps being, a thrilling journey. A journey that led me, for the time being, to dedicate my full expertise on helping local studios branch out, on promoting this amazing industry all over the country and on sharing knowledge on various game development topics towards all those interested in knowing how video games are made! Be a GameDev!

What’s your workshop going to be about?

Most often, game design refers to the way the game is played (game mechanics/gameplay). What are the rules? How to play? What skills do we ask from the player? What makes the game fun and/or challenging? This workshop will give you a brief insight into the world of Rational Game Design.

Can you tell us a bit about the workshops learning outcomes?

Principles and theories in developing a game
About game mechanics, skills, and other game design ingredients.

Any tools/devices they should be bringing for the Workshop?

Nope.

Any advice you want to give aspiring designers?

Do not be afraid to fail because that’s the best school you can go to.
